Ketone Levels
The main source of the human body for the generation of energy is glucose. When your
body is low on glucose or insulin or if you have diabetes in such a case your body turns to
the accumulated fat for energy. When these fatty acids are being broken down the by-
product of this, ketones are formed. This process is normal for everyone. However, in a
person who has diabetes, these ketone levels can rise very much in the blood. If this is not
treated, this can result in a condition called DKA or Diabetic Ketoacidosis. It is much more
common in people with type 1 diabetes and in type 2 diabetes it is rare but can sometimes
happen. If you have got diabetes, you must be aware of the symptoms of high ketone levels.
And if you see these symptoms, you must call the local emergency as soon as possible.
Some of these symptoms are dry mouth, bad breath, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, frequent
urination, stomachache, etc.

You can test for high ketone levels using your blood or urine. A variety of medical kits are
available for you to do these tests at home. It is recommended for diabetes patients to
monitor their ketone levels two times a day. If the ketone level in your body gets out of
control, it can increase the acidic content in your blood and cause DKA which is very fatal
and can lead to swelling in the brain, unconsciousness, diabetic coma which can ultimately
lead to death. Therefore, it is very important to take necessary precautions.
