Side Effects of The Keto Diet

The Keto Diet has been gaining worldwide recognization in regards to weight loss. However, it is very very important to know about the side effects of this diet so that you can decide whether it’s right for you or not. First of all, originally the keto diet was being researched for the treatment of seizures that are caused in a person with epilepsy. When the body is in the state of ketosis, the metabolism uses ketones to convert them into energy and not glucose this makes the dieters feel unwell. This state is also widely known as the keto flu. Keto flu can cause various problems like headache, nausea, irritability, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, dehydration, and other such problems. This may last for only about a week in most people, but it makes them very weak.

Since the keto flu causes frequent urination, this results in a loss of a huge amount of electrolytes which can damage the kidneys, and due to dehydration, the chances of kidney stones are very high. Moreover, this lack of electrolytes can cause a disturbed heartbeat which further results in damage to the heart. It is much more common in children. Also, many experts state that the keto diet is very hard to follow for a long time and its results may not be permanent. The studies regarding the cholesterol level are not clear yet. Different studies give different results. Some of the other side effects or negative effects include constipation, disturbed sleep cycle, irregular menstrual cycle, etc.
